NATURAL CHILDBIRTH WITH MIDWIVES INCLUDING WATER BIRTHS

At Birth Village we promote and support Natural Childbirth while at the same time ensuring safety with close monitoring during pregnancy and labor and encouraging a healthy lifestyle with diet and exercise for a low risk pregnancy.

Natural Childbirth is a birth with no interventions and with low technology. This simply means we do not intervene in the natural process of birth and labor unless action is warranted and needed. Midwives at Birth Village are well trained in emergency responses , administering fluids, suturing etc though our primary goal would be to respect the natural physiological response that a woman's pregnant body is truly capable of.

There are several elements to a successful natural childbirth including:

  • A woman and her partners complete and full commitment to natural birth as well as a desire to educate themselves on pregnancy and on prenatal health.
  • A Low Risk and healthy pregnancy with no medical issues.
  • Classes on good nutrition, relaxation, breathing and meditation techniques, along with a very active cardio and yoga classes to help ensure a healthy mama and baby which are provided at birth village.
  • Comprehensive hour long prenatal visits to discuss all aspects of the woman's pregnancy journey while giving her ample time to ask as many questions as needed and giving her full answers, informed consent and support in her choices for her body.
  • Encouraging a community of women to support each other during this time and to learn together what the process is for a natural birth. Peer support is important to help a woman gain confidence to make those choices that may be difficult in a cultural or societal setting.
  • Supporting the women to move as she wants during labor and not asking her to lie down thereby restricting her movement to deal with contractions but helping her embrace them with confidence.
  • Most of our clients are first time moms but we also serve women who have had a previous C-section. The midwives at Birthvillage have training and experience in helping make birth a positive experience for both of these situations. Giving them the information and confidence to move forward in their journey as a new mother.
  • Access to water for labor and/or birth as well as a birth stool, a birth rope and a birth ball for comfort and helping with baby descent.
  • A good support team that agrees with her choices 100% and is there while she is birthing with food, liquid, kind words and positive energy.
  • A safe and nurturing environment with proper medical monitoring as outlined by the WHO such as a Doppler, blood pressure readings and available labs to help the woman and her midwives make the best decisions for her labor and birth.
  • Midwives at Birthvillage have years of experience in all elements of natural birth. We not only have strong skills but more importantly we work on our intuition as well as the woman's to know what is the best decision for her and her baby.
  • One of our biggest hallmarks at Birthvillage is providing complete one to one care for a mother in a labor, It will never be a situation of hastening the mother/partner ,coming in at the very last minute, but one where her team would be with her throughout her labor and postpartum .
  • The whole team at Birth Village strive to give individual care to each client and their families along with outstanding midwifery care.

WHAT IS WATER LABOUR & BIRTH?

Water Birth is the process of giving birth in a tub of warm water. Some women choose to labor in the water and get out for delivery; other women decide to stay In the water for the delivery as well. The theory behind water birth is that the baby has been in the amniotic sac for 9 months and birthing into a similar environment is gentler for the baby and less stressful for the mother.

It is the belief of midwives, birthing centers and a growing number of obstetricians, that reducing the stress during labor and delivery also reduces fetal complications.

WHAT ARE THE POTENTIAL BENEFITS OF WATER BIRTH?

Benefits for Mother:

  • Water is soothing, comforting, relaxing
  • In the later stages of labor, the water seems to increase the woman's energy
  • The buoyancy lessens her body weight, allows free movement and new positioning
  • Buoyancy promotes more efficient uterine contractions and better blood circulation, resulting In better oxygenation of the uterine muscles, less pain for the mother, and more oxygen for the baby
  • Immersion In water often helps lower high blood pressure caused by anxiety.
  • Water seems to alleviate stress-related hormones, allowing the moher's body to produce endorphins, which are pain-inhibitors.
  • Water causes the perineum to become more elastic and relaxed, which reduces the Incidence and severity of tearing and the need for an episiotomy and stitches.
  • As the laboring woman relaxes physically she is able to relax mentally, concentrating her efforts inward on the birth process.
  • The water provides a sense of privacy, which releases inhibitations, anxiety and fears.

Benefits for Baby:

  • Provides a similar environment as the amniotic sac
  • Eases the stress of the birth, providing reassurance and security
